The 3 biggest fire risks in storage

Dense storage

Cramped aisles and high-bay systems promote chimney effects and the rapid spread of fire.

Combustible materials
Highly combustible packaging and self-igniting materials significantly increase the risk of fire in your warehouse.

Automation
The risk of fire also increases due to potential electrical faults and overheating of conveyor systems.

Our fire protection solutions

Individual concepts

Minimax develops customized fire protection solutions for your specific requirements - whether for automated warehouses, deep-freeze warehouses or hazardous areas.

Holistic approach

We offer you everything you need to protect your assets: from preventive measures to modern firefighting systems and efficient safety solutions.

Compact sprinkler systems - safe fire protection, flexible in use.

Minimax sprinklers detect fires at an early stage and activate automatically. They minimize damage through targeted water discharge - only affected sprinkler heads open, which reduces water consumption and environmental impact.

Optimum integration

Compact design for racking systems and sprinkler control centers. Space savings of up to 50%.

Flexible solutions

Wet, dry and preaction sprinklers - ideal for warehouses and logistics.

Maximum safety

VdS & FM-certified, durable and precisely controllable.

Our innovation in fire prevention

OxeoEcoPrevent

Minimize fire risks through targeted oxygen reduction by means of nitrogen supply.

Ideal for:

  • Deep-freeze storage
  • Compact container storage
  • Small load carriers

New: Oxeo EcoPrevent FC

Hydrogen-based fuel cell technology for greater safety, energy generation and environmental protection

Safe fire protection for every area

Automated compact container storage

Efficient use of space and maximum safety for AutoStore® systems. Protect your warehouse from sparks, overheating and the risk of flammable storage containers.

High-bay warehouse

Protected area:
High-bay warehouses are up to 50 m high and are usually designed to hold Euro pallets. Their capacity ranges from a few thousand pallet spaces to several hundred thousand. They therefore offer space for extremely large quantities of goods on a very small footprint. Storage and retrieval machines move in an aisle between two rows of racking.

Fire protection:

Sprinkler systems have proven particularly effective for high-bay warehouses. In the classic variant, sprinklers are installed both under the ceiling and in the racks. However, if it is possible to use ESFR sprinklers (Early Suppression Fast Response), which are only installed under the ceiling, the rack sprinkler system can be omitted. In addition to sprinkler systems, fire detection systems are also used in high-bay warehouses for early fire detection. In these cases, Minimax recommends HELIOS AMX5000 aspirating smoke detectors with vertical installation of the aspiration pipes in the racks and installation of the evaluation units in easily accessible locations. One of the advantages of this over point-type smoke detectors is that they can be serviced very easily and without interrupting operations.

Deep-freeze storage

Protected areas:
Deep-freeze warehouses are particularly widespread in the food industry and in downstream retail. The stored goods and merchandise are stored here at temperatures of up to -40 °C. The necessary thermal insulation can consist of non-combustible or combustible insulating materials with different fire behavior, often in the form of sandwich elements. Rack storage is predominant in deep-freeze warehouses.

Fire protection:

In deep-freeze warehouses, Oxeo Prevent fire prevention systems are the ideal solution, as their application requirements - no permanent presence of people in the warehouse, very tight building envelope and low fresh air intake due to storage and retrieval - are aimed at to maintain the cold anyway. In addition, they offer perfect protection when storing smoke- and temperature-sensitive foods, for example. Oxeo Prevent fire prevention systems are usually used in conjunction with HELIOS AMX5000 aspirating smoke detectors with highly sensitive settings for early fire detection. Heated air sampling openings ensure long-term functionality in deep-freeze areas. A smouldering fire will not develop into an open fire thanks to Oxeo Prevent - but without early fire detection, the fire and its cause would remain permanently undetected. Alternatively, sprinkler systems can be used - preferably with ESFR sprinklers. If there is a frost-free gap above the cold room ceiling with sufficient space, suspended Viking ESFR dry sprinklers are recommended. With the Minimax PipeGuard Antifreeze system, sprinkler systems can be used in deep-freeze warehouses down to -40 °C.

Hazardous materials storage

Protected area:
Hazardous substances are substances or mixtures that are explosive, flammable, harmful to health or hazardous to the environment. The warehouses in which they are stored can be of any typical design, although special laws and regulations apply to their design. These require, among other things, fall-proof storage, floor protection through drip pans and extinguishing water retention systems as well as the avoidance of operational ignition sources.

Fire protection:
Basically, the fire protection to be planned in hazardous materials warehouses is determined in particular by the properties of the stored goods. Therefore, almost the entire spectrum of fire extinguishing systems is used here. Oxeo inert gas extinguishing systems are often the preferred solution for this type of storage: fires are extinguished quickly and without residue and possible reactions between the burning goods and the extinguishing agent are excluded. Alternatives are Oxeo EcoPrevent, CO₂ or foam extinguishing systems. A fire detection system triggers the extinguishing system. UniVario flame and heat detectors are used for detection.

Paternoster storage

Protected area:
Paternoster warehouses are vertical carousels up to 30 m high - completely enclosed by sheet metal sheathing - in which the entire goods typically move through an opening for storage and retrieval. An ideal storage type for small parts. They also offer the ergonomic advantage that the stored goods move automatically towards the operator and not vice versa.

Fire protection:
A water spray extinguishing system with special extinguishing nozzles is ideal for automatic closed storage systems. This can be connected to an existing sprinkler system for building protection. If, on the other hand, the paternoster warehouse is particularly high, sensitive goods are stored in the paternoster sensitive goods are stored in the paternoster or if the use of water is likely to result in long interruptions to operations, an Oxeo inert gas extinguishing system is recommended. Nitrogen has the advantage over other extinguishing gases that it is somewhat lighter than air and therefore - after flooding the paternoster in the event of a fire - only escapes slowly from the bottom opening for storage and retrieval. Extinguishing systems are triggered by a fire alarm system, for detection we recommend the combination with the HELIOS AMX5000 aspirating smoke detector.
