Fighting fire efficiently with water mist

The Minifog EconAqua water mist extinguishing system offers particularly efficient building protection through the use of innovative low-pressure water mist
technology. Compared to conventional sprinkler systems, the EconAqua system uses up to 85 percent less extinguishing water, reducing potential water damage to a minimum. The EconAqua control panel can also be designed much more compactly than a classic sprinkler system. This saves space and on-site costs and makes the Minifog EconAqua water mist extinguishing system ideal for retrofitting in existing buildings.

Newly developed - EconAqua Car Park
Thanks to the development of the EconAqua Water Mist Sprinkler U16, EconAqua is now the low-pressure water mist system with the widest range of applications on the market. Furthermore, it is the only system approved by the VdS for use in multi-storey and underground parking lots with a ceiling height of up to 3.6 meters.

Efficacy confirmed - VdS approval received
The effectiveness of the new EconAqua U16 sprinkler has been verified with a range of extensive fire tests under the supervision of VdS Schadenverhütung. They were carried out at the Minimax Fire Research Center based on current VdS and EN requirements. In the test setup for a typical parking garage situation, the effectiveness of EconAqua was compared to a conventional dry sprinkler system as per VdS CEA 4001 (including a safety margin).

The EconAqua system successfully passed the fire tests. Furthermore, it was verified that the EconAqua low-pressure water mist system provides the same fire protection as conventional sprinkler systems but at a lower water consumption, thus offering a higher efficiency.

Advantages at a glance

  • VdS-approved low-pressure water mist system with the widest application area on the market
  • Efficient use of extinguishing water helps to reduce the amount of water damage
  • EconAqua sprinklers cover larger protected areas than conventional sprinklers
  • Can also be used as a dry system without pipe trace heating or antifreeze in frost-prone areas
  • Requires less installation space thanks to smaller nominal pipe widths due to lower extinguishing water requirement

Function

Extinguishing area

The nominal pipe diameters used in these areas mainly lie between DN20 and DN40 and are much smaller than those used in classic sprinkler pipework. In standby conditions the pipework in the sections is filled with pressurized water (wet system for frost-proof rooms) or with compressed air or nitrogen (dry system for rooms subject to frost hazard). In the event of a fire, the water mist sprinklers located in the immediate vicinity of the fire activate.

EconAqua pump room

In addition to the units which maintain the pressure in the pipework of the sections, the EconAqua pump room also includes the fire detection panel, the central alarm station, the master pump, a water source, and various other components that ensure safe operation of the fire-fighting system. The much smaller amount of water used in the Minifog EconAqua system means that the EconAqua pump room is up to 80% smaller than a classic sprinkler pump room.

The signals of the section valve sets and of the central alarm valve are transmitted to the fire detection panel. From here, alarms are set off to alert internal and external rescue teams. The main pump automatically starts if the pressure in the main distribution piping drops as a result of one of the section valve sets opening. The source of water may either be a water tank with automatic feed or – when using suitable safety devices – a direct connection to the public drinking water system.

Section valve sets

Every section is allocated an EconAqua valve set. In the event of a fire, i.e. after a sprinkler release, the pressure in the pipework of the affected section drops to a level such that the associated valve set is tripped and the fire-fighting process is started. At the same time a signal is sent to the fire detection control panel, in order to transmit an alarm and to better localize the fire.

Applications

The Minifog EconAqua water mist sprinkler systems can be used for a number of applications, covering several fire hazard classes. Classes which are defined in the VdS guidelines for sprinkler systems (VdS CEA 4001).

Hotel rooms
Hotel rooms

Protection zone

Hotel rooms are retreat and relaxation rooms, mostly occupied at night by guests. During the day it is mainly staff that enter the rooms. There is often a very stringent demand for convenience and interior design in these rooms. For this reason, the rooms have already been fitted extensively with electrical devices, and this trend can be expected to continue in future.

Risks

  • Defective electrical devices, e.g. kettles, radio, or TV
  • Incompletely extinguished cigarette butts
  • Highly flammable materials

Fire Protection

Minifog EconAqua water mist extinguishing systems are a water and space-saving alternative to sprinkler systems in hotel rooms. In hotel rooms, they can be designed as extended coverage wall sprinklers, which means that a standard room can be safely protected against fire with a single sprinkler. When using undercover sprinklers, the extinguishing system fits particularly unobtrusively into the ceiling.

Offices
Offices

Protection zone

Offices, conference rooms and dining rooms are generally used by staff and guests. In addition, staff members may also retire to break rooms or smoking rooms and to kitchens during work. Corridors run through the entire building, serving as a main traffic route.

Risks

  • Defective electrical devices such as projectors and computers
  • Overheating of the lighting
  • Short circuits at vending machines

Fire Protection

Minifog EconAqua water mist extinguishing systems offer space- and water-saving protection and can be connected to an existing sprinkler system. In areas with higher ceilings, sprinkler systems provide reliable fire protection.

Parking areas
Parking areas

Protection zone

Extensive parking facilities are especially convenient for customers and employees. Due to space limitations, parking is often provided in highly frequented, multi-story car parks.

Risks

  • Technical defects in parked vehicles
  • Careless smoking
  • Arson
  • Rapid spreading of fire and development of smoke

Fire Protection

Minfog EconAqua water mist extinguishing systems offer a water and space-saving fire extinguishing method for underground car parks. For higher ceilings, sprinkler systems are a reliable alternative.
