Overview

The highly complex technical equipment of data centers and other IT areas, as well as the materials used there, carry a particularly high risk of fire. Due to the high concentration of energy and the materials used, e.g. plastics, data centers present an increased fire risk. 

Due to absent or unprofessional cooling, hot spots can occur in the system, causing overheating. Numerous active electronic components, complex cabling in false floors and transition resistances in the many cable terminals entail a risk of short-circuits, technical defect or thermal overloading. This is especially true for the computer and server areas, including the associated climate brackets in data centers. Even small or medium-sized server rooms and closed server cabinets as part of a company's infrastructure in any sector of the economy feature the same fire hazards.

Flames, smoke, gas emissions, heat – fire has many facets. Minimax has the right fire detectors for the various areas within data centers. Their signals converge in the fire detection and extinguishing control panel, which issues an alarm to the people at risk and the fire brigade. In addition, the Minimax panel monitors the installed fire protection system for proper functioning and electrically triggers the extinguishing systems.

Areas with special fire risks or deployment conditions require a tailored volume or local protection system. Oxeo inert gas extinguishing systems, Oxeo EcoPrevent fire prevention systems, MX 1230 fire extinguishing systems, water spray extinguishing systems, Minifog ProCon XP high pressure water mist extinguishing systems, hydrant systems, CPS 1230 cabinet protection systems and OneU fire protection systems are used in data centers.

All alarm and status messages of the fire protection systems installed by Minimax and of other trades can be visualized on screen surfaces by the Inveron hazard management system.

Structural fire protection, as well as technical systems by Minimax Mobile Services, such as fire extinguishers, wall hydrants and smoke and heat extraction systems, complete fire protection in data centers.

    Protection zone

    The computer and server areas, including climate brackets, in data centers can cover a surface of several hundred square meters and extend across several levels. The computers and servers are aligned on a vast surface with false floors; and the climate bracket includes a large number of climate cabinets.

    Fire Protection

    Oxeo EcoPrevent systems offer energy efficient fire protection at the highest safety level by using inert gases, such as argon or nitrogen, which are added according to need. They represent availability, flexibility, and Green IT: this makes them the ideal solution for computer and server areas as well as for the associated climate brackets in data centers. The activation of the extinguishing system is operated via a fire alarm system, while the HELIOS AMX5000 smoke aspirating system allows early detection.

    Control rooms are very sensitive and high-quality facilities which control fundamental production processes. They contain electric switching and control equipment plus false floors with extensive cabling. Even minor defects may cause substantial operational failures.

    Fire Protection

    Oxeo inert gas extinguishing systems offer reliable protection in control rooms. For smaller control rooms, MX 1230 extinguishing systems offer an economical alternative. The extinguishing system is triggered by a fire detection system using punctiform smoke detectors or HELIOS AMX5000 aspirating smoke detectors.

    Emergency generators are often housed in separate premises. During a power failure, these generators secure the power supply, maintain business operation and prevent financial loss due to an operational interruption.

    Fire Protection

    For local protection of the emergency generator, Minifog ProCon water mist extinguishing systems are ideal. These can be connected to the sprinkler systems installed for building protection purposes and fight fires quickly and effectively through open water mist nozzles. Minifog ProCon water mist extinguishing systems are triggered by a fire detection system that uses UniVario flame or heat detectors to detect fires.

    Transformers make sure that electricity is ready for network distribution. They function as links between the turbine, the turbine generators and the network. They consist typically of the transformer housing with a cooler, oil conservators and oil-filled insulators.

    Fire Protection

    As soon as overheating is detected, the transformer is automatically shut down to prevent a fire from breaking out. The basis for the fire protection is a Buchholz relay. This relay ensures prompt identification of cooling required for components at risk of overheating. The TrafoProtect solution developed by Minimax based on the latest research results, protection aims and testing schemes completes the concept. The special UL-approved nozzles, Viking Model A and Model C-1, achieve an even and consistent distribution of water when activated. In doing so, the system successfully meets the protection aims of "control" and "suppression". At the same time, the consumption of water can be reduced to a level significantly below that of conventional deluge systems. A fire detection system will trigger the extinguishing system.

    Server rooms are important, sensitive areas. In these rooms, data of high importance for business operations is stored, managed and exchanged over the network. The irretrievable loss of this data through a fire may have considerable economic consequences for productivity or even the future of a company.

    • Considerable damage even in the case of small fires

    Fire Protection

    For small and medium-sized server rooms, the MX 1230 extinguishing system is the ideal solution. It gives residue-free extinguishing using the innovative Novec™ 1230 extinguishing agents and requires very little space. Oxeo inert gas extinguishing systems are ideal for large server rooms. The MX 1230 extinguishing system and Oxeo inert gas extinguishing systems are triggered, and fires are detected, by a fire detection system using a HELIOS AMX5000 smoke aspirating system.

    Protection zone

    Offices, conference rooms and dining rooms are generally used by staff and guests. In addition, staff members may also retire to break rooms or smoking rooms and to kitchens during work. Corridors run through the entire building, serving as a main traffic route.

    Fire Protection

    Minifog EconAqua water mist extinguishing systems offer space- and water-saving protection and can be connected to an existing sprinkler system. In areas with higher ceilings, sprinkler systems provide reliable fire protection.
